An anonymous donor has pledged up to $200,000 to create a new splash pad park in Dixon. The donor is interested in creating a facility similar to Splash Cannon Spray Park in Oregon, and has asked that the new splash pad be placed in the Meadows near Wooden Wonderland. After a nationwide search, Augustana College has a new provost. Dr. Dianna Shandy, a professor of anthropology, former associate provost for strategic initiatives and interim inaugural dean of the faculty at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., has been chosen as Augie’s next provost and vice president of academic affairs. Dr. Shandy will take over the role in July 2023. It’s currently held by Dr. Wendy Hilton-Morrow, who decided to return to teaching communication studies and journalism at Augustana. [Read More]

On June 21, Auston McLain, 38, of Davenport, was found guilty by a federal jury of one count of attempted enticement of a minor and one count of traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual activity, according to a news release. Over two days of trial before Chief U.S. District Judge Sarah Darrow, the United States presented evidence establishing that from Nov. 10, 2020, through Nov. 14, 2020, McLain communicated with an individual he believed to be a minor about engaging in sexual activity, sent pornographic pictures to the person he believed was a minor, asked for pictures, and then traveled from Iowa to Illinois with the intent to meet with the child and engage in sexual activity, officials allege. Pre-teen Miss Jones County Chloe White of Laurel will be a contestant in the statewide Little Miss and Mr. Magnolia State Pageant finals in Vicksburg July 25-26. Her parents are Joe and Amy White.
