Top cookie-seller honored during Girl Scout proclamation ceremony | Free News

She was a first-timer. And a go-getter. And really didn’t realize the significance of her accomplishment at first.

Local Girl Scout Samiyah Shelby sold more than 1,500 boxes of the group’s famous cookies this past campaign. It was her first year as a Girl Scout and her first year to sell the familiar boxes of treats. She says that she and her mom went door to door every Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and set up at grocery stores on Saturdays and Sundays, always with a smile and a box of cookies in her hand.

“I feel that being a Girl Scout is good because you get more education and get to play with other girls,” Shelby said. “I learn a lot.”

Shelby was a little surprised to be the highest seller. She didn’t know that 1,500 was a lot of boxes sold, she just kept on selling away to the finish line.

On Monday, Mayor Johnny Magee declared the week of March 10-16 as Girl Scout Week in the City of Laurel at a proclamation signing at City Hall. This year marks the 112th anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA, the largest and most impactful leadership program for girls in the world.

The Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi serves more than 10,000 members in 45 counties in south and central Mississippi, helping them to become strong, confident young women. The local Red Wing chapter, serving Jones and Jasper counties, is made up of 200 girls from 12 different troops.

“Girl Scouts are more than just a group,” Magee said. “Scouting activities help girls develop leadership abilities, learn practical skills, build meaningful friends

Troop leader Matikia Wilson has been serving in that role for nearly eight years.

“Seeing the girls happy, learning different activities and teaching them badge work are why I love doing this,” Wilson said.

“We are slowly trying to build up the girls, and beginning April 1, any new girl/parent that joins can do so for a special price of $35 and that will pay for the rest of this year and the following year as well.”

Magee said, “Girl Scouts make our community better for everyone.”

And for the record, Magee’s favorite cookie is the Trefoil shortbread, the iconic original.
